Understanding SXS Racing Classes
SXS racing classes exist to group drivers and vehicles with comparable age, experience and performance. The exact Outlaw Series and NORES class list is controlled by the current rulebook, but several common categories help new racers understand where to begin.
Driver-Level Categories
- Youth: age-based divisions using approved youth SXS machines and safety requirements.
- Novice or beginner: entry-level opportunities where offered.
- Amateur: developing racers building experience in organized competition.
- Sportsman: experienced non-professional racers and competitive builds.
- Pro or Pro Am: top-level competition with stricter eligibility, technical and purse requirements.
Vehicle Categories
Machines may also be separated by displacement, turbocharged versus naturally aspirated engines, stock or limited modifications, and open or purpose-built configurations. A vehicle that looks similar to another SXS may belong in a different class because of engine, ECU, suspension or chassis changes.
How to Select Your Class
- Identify the exact year, make, model and engine configuration.
- List performance modifications, including engine, ECU, intake, exhaust, turbo and suspension changes.
- Check the driver’s age and prior racing experience.
- Compare the machine with every technical rule in the likely class.
- Ask race officials before registering when a rule is unclear.
Do not rely on an old flyer or another racer’s setup. Rules can change by season and event. The published rulebook and official event information determine eligibility.
