Short Course vs Endurance vs Desert SXS Racing

Which Type of SXS Racing Is Right for You?

Short course, endurance and desert-style SXS racing all use side-by-sides, but they reward different skills and preparation. Choosing the right format helps you build a realistic race program.

Short Course SXS Racing

Short course competition takes place on a closed track with repeated laps, visible battles, jumps and tight corners. Starts and passing are critical. Race weekends may use practice, qualifying and multiple motos. It is a strong fit for drivers who enjoy close competition and want frequent opportunities to improve lap speed.

Endurance SXS Racing

Endurance racing stretches competition across multiple hours. Driver consistency, fuel planning, pit work, communications and mechanical reliability become just as important as outright speed. NORES events are designed around this long-format challenge, including major multi-hour races.

Desert-Style, GP and Rally Racing

Longer off-road courses may include changing terrain, rocks, dust, elevation and high-speed sections. Drivers must manage visibility, navigation, vehicle temperature and tire durability. Exact formats and equipment requirements depend on the event.

Quick Comparison

  • Closest racing: short course
  • Most teamwork and pit strategy: endurance
  • Most terrain variation: desert-style and GP/rally
  • Best first choice: the format that fits your current SXS, budget and nearby schedule

Many racers compete in more than one format. Begin with the current schedule, compare class rules and select an event where your equipment already meets most requirements.
