How Do You Start Racing a SXS?
Starting SXS racing is easier when you make the decisions in the right order. First choose the type of competition that matches your vehicle, experience and goals. Outlaw Series offers short course and regional opportunities, while NORES focuses on long-format endurance racing. Some western events may use GP, rally or desert-style formats.
1. Choose a Racing Format
- Short course: closed-course racing with jumps, corners, starts and multiple motos.
- Endurance: multi-hour events where preparation, teamwork and reliability matter.
- Desert-style or GP/rally: longer terrain-based courses that reward consistency and vehicle control.
2. Find the Correct SXS Class
Classes can be based on driver age, experience, engine type, displacement, turbo or naturally aspirated configuration, and permitted modifications. Never choose a class from the name alone. Read the current rulebook and contact race officials if your machine does not clearly fit.
3. Review Safety and Technical Rules
Before spending money, confirm requirements for the cage, seats, harnesses, fire protection, personal safety equipment, number plates, tires and other technical items. Event-specific supplemental rules can add requirements for endurance, GPS or pit procedures.
4. Complete Membership and Registration
Use the current membership and registration links on OutlawSeries.com. Register before the deadline, confirm your race number and monitor official announcements for schedule changes.
5. Prepare for Race Weekend
Inspect the SXS, torque critical hardware, service fluids, check belts and tires, organize tools and spares, and arrive early enough for registration and technical inspection. Bring the published schedule and know when drivers meetings, practice and staging begin.
Your first goal should be a safe, complete race weekend. Speed comes with seat time; preparation and following procedures are what get you onto the track.
